Champions Online Free Test

by Agile

I know Racy mentioned this, but it actually goes live today.

Racy and I beta tested this game, and we actually really enjoyed it – to the point of dropping $400 on two lifetime accounts! Problem. On launch day, they completely changed the effects of the classes we had chose.

First off, that completely changed our characters’ abilities on launch day. MAN did that hack us off. We felt like we bought something and got a shell game instead.

Second, any company that makes those kinds of radical changes without even testing them cannot be trusted.

However, on the plus side, Cryptic gave us refunds! Faith restored. At least I know I can trust them not to completely hose me over, unlike the producers of Aion, who are just schmucks.

Finally, the character models on Champions Online were OUT THE BOX. I mean, stunning. Right there with AoC and Aion. The quests needed a little help, buy overall, the game was actually pretty fun. Did I mention the character models? And one can imagine what Racy looked like with a name like.. err, well. You get the picture.

I also liked the way they worked out the powers for the characters as well. I mean, that is until they hosed mine, but I imagine they fixed that bit.. game wouldn’t have survived without it.

Anyway – hey, it’s a free trial. You get to look at super (pun intended!) sexy character models and get a break from some other game, until The Old Republic comes out. What could go wrong? ;)

While the game is still up and running, it's definitely had some rough patches over the past year. From the changes to powers on launch day (after pre-order folks had settled in to their characters and power sets already), to attempting to charge for a new content patch while most players agreed there were still severe holes in content that came with the game (they eventually gave in on this and gave the patch away). The player base has definitely shrunk from the first few months, though that's pretty much par for the course these days. With DCUO launching in two months, they have to be a little bit worried about the subs hey have left.
