Sony Online Entertainment is jumping on the F2P bandwagon, as games such LOTRO F2P are coming out of the beta stage and into release. Everquest II takes a slightly different spin on the F2P market, however. For example, in LOTRO, you can join servers with your paying friends and explore the game with them. In EQ II Extended, the servers for F2P will be separate from the paying community play on, therefore, there is no crossover between the items that people earn through adventure and endless hours doing the same dungeon raid to get that one item and those people who choose to spend hard-earned cash on those same items.
It’s a neat concept – I know, as a die-hard player of games, going into a game and feeling that my efforts have been lessened by someone who happens to have a bit more of the green stuff! On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d personally play the F2P. I mean, I already have a few characters in EQ2, and friends that actually still pay to play; why would I change servers just to play for free?
Currently, the F2P version of the game is in Alpha testing, but any day now, it will go into beta. From what I’ve read, if you join in the beta, and spend your money in the store, you’ll be able to keep your stuff once beta is done.
Frankly, in this economy, it probably isn’t a bad idea for the big players to be offering F2P as an option!
